Cocktail Hour: Michelada

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Looking for something a little more interesting than beer to drink with your football?  Looking for an alternative to a bloody mary that isn't so strong with vodka?  Let me introduce you to the Micheleda.  This is a spicy beer cocktail that is popular in Northern Mexico according to the internet.  I had this the other night after coming in from watching a hockey game outside at Fenway Park.  Needless to say I was a bit chilly, and this spicy concoction of beer and spicy seasonings really warmed me up quick but didn't knock me out, as cocktails tend to do these days.  The recipe after the jump.

Spicy Micheleda (adapted from the recipes on Seriouseats.com and in Saveur Magazine)

As you can see, what makes this  cocktail spicy in red is Tabasco sauce.  The vinegar, spicy taste of Tabasco goes great with beer   - after all, after biting into a buffalo wing, what is it you most want to drink? Beer of course.  If you want a little more oomph than just beer, a shot of tequila would go perfectly in here.  Adjust the spices to your liking.  I rimmed the glass with a mix of salt and a southwest seasoning mix.
Ingredients
Juice of half a lime plus lime for garnish
3-5 dashes of Tabasco or other hot sauce
1 dash soy sauce
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
pinch of black pepper
1 bottle of beer, preferably a dark Mexican beer like Negro Modelo
Salt and spices to rim glass

Directions: Rub lime on rim of glass. Rub glass in salt and spice mix.  Juice half of lime into glass.  Add Tabasco, soy sauce, Worcestershire and pepper to glass.  Pour beer on top.  Enjoy.

And if you add Clamato to it, we call it 'Sangre de Cristo'(North of Mexico) or 'Ojo Rojo' (South)
    Try it!
